As a mum, I chased a dream for my kids… that they would be nurtured by a supportive group of friends as they grew and became teenagers. But in today’s world of busy lives and technology overload, I wondered if our children are able to find uncluttered space anymore where they can share stories, help each other and learn while having fun.

This curious question lead me to look at environments where my girls and their friends were not plugged in to some type of electronic device – something more collective. I began making sewing kits for them and their friends – I was amazed. Before me, I watched the dream I was chasing for my children grow as they had fun sewing with their friends, chatting and learning ….

A light bulb went on and Sew Sista was born!

Over 40 holiday workshops, 2 After-School programs, more than 150 excited children - community support is what has made Sew Sista come true.

I had the whole picture for Sew Sista from the start. I knew it had legs, then set out to learn as much as I could about growing a small business. The Sew Sista Workshops were a natural progression that answered the following questions:

Would kids enjoy basic hand-sewing workshops?
Would parents see value and understand the benefits of a service that offerers their kids classes in sewing?
Would holiday programs be favourable?
What are the easiest locations for parents to access our services?

The workshops have turned out to be a success with schools now interested in running After School Care programs and holiday workshops always filling up quickly. The Sew Sista Workshops hopefully show that sewing is not only a useful skill, it builds confidence, inspires creativity and promotes individuality. The children attending engage with the project & techniques and show they love learning to sew!

Sew Sista’s journey so far has been hard work but truly rewarding with so many little faces beaming with delight at their own handmade creations… but I need help to share the gift of sewing with more children. So, came the next question..

Do parents want a thoughtfully designed, quality range of sewing products for their kids?

PRODUCT LINE
Reaching this goal means, I will be able to fly to China and meet suppliers who I have spent many hours with sourcing products and developing samples for Sew Sista’s online range. I will be able to support Sew Sista's Vision by offering more children access to sewing resources and Sew Sista Project Kits through an online store. Plus the exciting possibility of providing materials and lessons to those children who otherwise may not get the opportunity,
We have already spent personal funds setting up the business structure, legalities (including Trademarking & Public Liability), promotion and the website. I am part funding the trip to China to buy products… I just need a little help to get the rest of the way.




WORKSHOPS
Currently, I run the workshops with one other teacher and can only offer a limited number of workshops around Brisbane. We love to do it, so last school holidays we did 14! It was so much fun to connect and show over 70 little girls. Boys are welcome but I have purposely designed it with girls in mind for now. I personally pack each free Mini Tool Kit, prepare the materials and design project formats for the children that attend. Cash flow will help me plan ahead to continue and grow these so we can reach more kiddies.

Phew, my home is safe ­ I won’t need to apply for another extension on our home loan to fully pay for the trip... yep, that’s how much I believe in my dream to grow Sew Sista and GIVE our next generation the useful life skill of sewing.

Looking ahead
I plan to expand the After-School Program to three other schools in Brisbane. Distribute the product line through other on-line stores and retails outlets.
