Dockland Spaces

Commissioned by the City of Melbourne, MAB Corporation, and Places Victoria, Docklands Spaces is a pilot initiative by Renew Australia to activate some of the currently underutilised spaces in Docklands through incubating short-term uses by creative enterprises and independent local initiatives. We are proud to have been chosen as one of the selected participants.

Note: Our next exhibition will be held late July and will feature artworks by all our supporters' who pledge $30 or more!

The Gallery

D11@Docklands is an artist-led exhibition space that will feature curated exhibitions that support an interdisciplinary approach to contemporary art practice. We are planning to offer a space where artists are encouraged to create and exhibit works of art outside their traditional media and to actively pursue collaborations. And at minimal cost!!!!

The official opening of the space was held on June 29th, 2013. The event was huge with almost 200 people through! Now we have to pay to be able to keep on running the space!

The gallery, coordinated by The Second Collective will feature a series of exhibitions curated on a two-three weekly basis. Each show features group, invited collaborations and solo exhibitions/ performances supported by an afternoon/evening opening event. Invited artists will be able to exhibit in one of the two large spaces at a nominal cost. The key people operating
D11@Docklands at this stage are Michael Carolan, Tul Suwannakit, Beka Hannah and Paul Dew. Other members of The Second Collective will also be lending their assistance at various times.

The gallery will be actively manned at all ‘times’ during exhibitions as well as featuring one-off events, art workshops, seminars and other art-related activities. A key objective is to engage both indirectly and directly with the public. All shows will be curated with this objective in mind.

D11@Docklands features 2 huge exhibition spaces with ceilings almost 3.5m high, great natural light in the front gallery, a huge rear space suitable for immersive, video and sound work and excellent window frontage!

Exhibiting artists will be chosen for their willingness to create a discourse with both active and transient viewers and their enthusiasm to happily discuss their work, as well as their working processes.

We also want to invite all of our artist friends to pledge at least $30 so that you can be part of our special supporters' exhibition. This is great way to show your commitment to the project and help us fund a space that might even, down-the-track, feature your work.

Location

D11@Docklands is located on the east side of the Waterfront City Piazza, just near Harbour Town. Of course it is easily accessible via the 86 tram. Just get off at stop D11. We are also jut a few doors down from Renew Docklands Community Arts.

Budget

We are calling on you to help us raise $5,000 to fund the project. This will enable us to offer the spaces to artists at just a nominal cost (to help with opening night events, promotion and utilities). The participating artists are also contributing their own funds and equipment but need to raise a lot more to run the space effectively, professionally and safely. The funds will be used in the following way:

(First 3-months)

Total $6,000 ($5,000 our Pozible campaign)
Materials $500
Equipment $500
Electricity $1300
Water $500
Opening event costs $1,500 ($250 * 6)
Promotion $500
Public Liability Insurance $260
Prizes $240
Running/admin. costs $350
Incidentals/installation costs $350
Of course any extra funds raised will be re-invested into assisting D11@Docklands to be sustainable in the longer-term.

Background: The Second Collective

One of the key objectives of The Second Collective is to present curated exhibitions that support an interdisciplinary approach to contemporary art practice. Exhibitions are planned and installed into the available space and aim to involve an element of active viewer participation. The Second Collective also invites new artists into each exhibition to encourage the ongoing development of a lively and dynamic artistic discourse.
