The story of ‘The Two Chairs’
Hi there!! I am a story collector. I would like to share with you a story that I recently stumbled across, a story that deeply shocked me to the core. I found a piece of piece of furniture, that had a stamp that read “European Labour Only”. It shocked me because back in the days of the White Australia Policy, the Australian Europeans felt threatened by the presence of the Chinese furniture makers. They offered cheap and affordable furniture which was like Ikea of the time. The stamp was a reminder for the European Australians to buy from their own kind.


Inspired by this dark hidden legacy, I’ve decided that something needed to be done to shed more light on the racism that is still around us. With the help of my friend Max, a furniture maker, we decided to handcraft two awesome chairs. One is white and the other is yellow.


Creative hopes for ‘The Two Chairs’
“The Two Chairs” is a creative platform that will hopefully engage and cultivate conversation. I would like to enlightened people on an intimate and personal level and generate meaningful one-on-one conversations that will help examine race and racism in Australia today. The responses will take on the artistic forms of an art decor installation, illustration, design, film, literature and theatre.

The Two Chairs aims to interact and unite the public by using creativity to send a strong message and help shed light on racism. “The Two Chairs” will focus on instigating micro-changes and inspire the desire to encourage and empower the audience to become proactive in creating a positive change.
The Two Chairs itself is a powerful tool that can move beyond creative territories, where it
it can either be an artistic statement, a story-collecting installation set in a cafe space or even featured in a theatrical piece.

Why are we raising money for ‘The Two Chairs’
The benchmark is to raise $3,000 in 20 days. The more money we raise, the more it will contribute to developing the project into new creative territories. Let’s make it possible to see these two chairs be in a powerful play that captures people’s imagination. So how about we aim for $7,500?

The minimum cost will cover the following: to make the two chairs (including materials), registrations for various art festivals, workshop venue hire, marketing and promotion expense, a voice recorder equipment.
