Stations of the Southern Cross
A Great Fantasia on Australian National Themes

UPDATE

We've hit target! Thankyou thankyou thankyou to all of our wonderful supporters - we are really excited about getting underway with this project and your help is hugely appreciated. We're spending time this week doing preliminary research and writing because we CANNOT WAIT TILL UNDERBELLY TIME.

If you haven't pledged but are still interested in supporting us, that would be hugely amazing of you. Money we raise past our target will go towards making our show work at night or in poor weather (it's outdoors so we anticipate a monsoon), and helping us concentrate on this project in a full time capacity. And there's still plenty of rewards on offer - festival tickets, mystery events, mixtapes and names.

Thanks again to all our supporters, you are truly excellent and attractive.

HI THERE!

Applespiel are thrilled to announce that we have been accepted to Underbelly Arts Lab and Festival 2013 this August on Cockatoo Island. We've been involved in Underbelly Arts in 2010 and 2011, and our projects Snail Piece and Awful Literature Is Still Literature, I Guess have gone on to be performed at Peat's Ridge, Crack Theatre Festival, Novemberism and Festival of Dangerous Ideas. This year, we've been selected to take part in a matched crowd funding campaign where every dollar raised up to our target will be matched by the Keir Foundation. Which means for every dollar you give, you're kind of giving us two! THIS IS AMAZING NEWS FOR US AND YOU

This Pozible campaign is to help Applespiel develop and perform a brand new work for the festival,Stations of the Southern Cross. It’s a big, challenging show, and after spending time working in the UK we’re excited to bring a new work to Sydney audiences.

THE SHOW

Stations of the Southern Cross is an interactive and experiential journey through Australian History, Australiana, Australian Cinema, Australian Culture, Contemporary Australian Culture, historical ideas of Australianness, un-Australianness and the land itself: Australia. We are creating a work in 5 stations, one for each of the stars on the cross, each a re-imagined and critical engagement with a period of Australian History. The audience will travel through TIME and SPACE, like Doctor Who in an akubra, to discover the weight of our past and our own complicity in its creation.

The show is a big challenge for us, from the extensive research, writing and construction to developing a rewarding interactive experience in an outdoor space. But we’re ready to throw ourselves into it –there’s a lot we want to explore and we can’t wait to find the most exciting way to do it.

IT’S GOING TO BE PRETTY EXPENSIVE

Part of this project will involve the construction of a new historical site on Cockatoo Island, that we’ll build over the lab. Between that, other set, costumes, technical equipment and transporting everything to the island, there’s a lot of cost we need to cover. We’ve been working hard and we’re contributing a lot of our own money, but we’re hoping to raise $2500 from this Pozible to help get it going.

THIS MONEY WILL GO TOWARDS

Construction materials to build a new historical site on Cockatoo Island.
100 stallions.
Horse riding lessons.
Set materials and incidental construction costs.
Southern Cross tatts for 3 members of Applespiel.
Damper (Flour, Water)
Costuming costs: akubras, police uniforms, Ned Kelly body armour.
One tonne of Dirt.Getting everyone to and from the island.
Corrugated iron to make a shed.
Mentoring from Steve Le Marquand on how to be really Australian.
The APRA rights to KheSahn, Wide Open Road, Great Southern Land.
Transport and shipping of materials.
Props: Footballs (League, AFL, Union), Cricket Pads.

*This money may not go towards some of these items

BUT HEY WAIT THIS IS REALLY COOL

The best thing about this Pozible is that the Keir Foundation has agreed to match us dollar for dollar up to our target. So for every ten dollars you give we’ll be getting twenty dollars. For every twenty-five dollars, fifty dollars. For every five hundred, double that. It’s a great initiative and one we’re keen to exploit. We’re asking you to help us do that.

So if we hit our target that means we will have raised $5000, which will go a long way to helping us to realise this project.

You can see the other seven projects that are also part of this initiative here.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

1. Pledge money and claim your reward. Remember, the Keir Foundation will double it.
2. Share this around your networks. Email, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.
3. Come out to see the work at Underbelly Arts Lab and Festival. It’s on Cockatoo Island, which is beautiful.

UNDERBELLY ARTS

Underbelly Arts exists to uncover Australia’s next great artists.

Since 2007 the Underbelly Arts Lab has provided opportunities for more than 600 artists to develop and create in a unique and supported environment where, over two weeks, audiences are invited to watch art unfold and take part in the process.

In 2013 Underbelly Arts is once again taking over Cockatoo Island and giving artists the chance to create and respond in one of Australia’s magnificent settings. These works will then be showcased as part of the Underbelly Arts Festival, a two-day art party that celebrates process, new ideas and the best emerging and experimental artists across Australia.

The Underbelly Arts Festival will take place on August 3 & 4.

A shoutout on the social media platform of your choice. Nathan even has a Friendster account, so no matter your internet persuasion, we’ve probably got you covered.
