I met you in a city that isn't on the map
'I met you in a city that isn't on the map ' grew from this in an effort to see life slow down, even if only for a few minutes. We sought to reach out and draw onlookers into an alternate reality, one in which your choices help shape the experience of a dying city and, from our experiments, we determined that a fascinating method for this kind of invitation is game play.
With the support of Underbelly Arts Festival and Legs On The Wall, we created a small prototype of 'I met you in a city that isn't on the map'. From testing what worked and what wasn't clear enough, we were able to create a streamlined version of our ideas, and this is what we're going to finalise on Cockatoo Island for touring around Australia and internationally.
How you can help build 'a city'
We've made up a budget of $13000 to create a working version of 'I met you in a city that isn't on the map'.
Through crowdfunding we hope to raise only $2500 of this, which doubles to $5000 with the support of the Keir Foundation.
With this amount we will:
* construct a central hub that will be easily built and packed down for touring. Dylan Tonkin, our designer extraordinaire, will be able to achieve this with $2000.
* use lights, sound and video to give this space a dynamic atmosphere - this will be both a reward system for completing activities as well as an indicator of time counting down to doom. We'll be dedicating $1000 towards this.
* hire, build and buy the objects that participants use as tools during 'I met you in a city that isn't on the map'. Many of these we'll source from every day items, but we'll have $500 for those hard-to-find gems.
Who is building this city?
We are a team of artists dedicated to creating performative encounters in immersive spaces. Our current work is a focus on inviting the public to participate in temporary worlds, through exploration and collaboration, in an effort to create a short-lived communal experience. Shared between the four of us are skills in theatre, film, photography, music and design, and we draw on every facet of these areas when generating new projects. We are James Brown, James Dalton, Lucy Parakhina and Dylan Tonkin. You can see more examples of our work at unhappen.org.
Who makes this possible?
Underbelly Arts exists to uncover Australia’s next great artists.
Since 2007 the Underbelly Arts Lab has provided opportunities for more than 600 artists to develop and create in a unique and supported environment where, over two weeks, audiences are invited to watch art unfold and take part in the process.
In 2013 Underbelly Arts is once again taking over Cockatoo Island and giving artists the chance to create and respond in one of Australia’s magnificent settings. These works will then be showcased as part of the Underbelly Arts Festival, a two-day art party that celebrates process, new ideas and the best emerging and experimental artists across Australia.
The Underbelly Arts Festival will take place on August 3 & 4.
