Help Me Get To Palestine

UPDATE: We've made out funding goal - the generosity of our readers once again, is very humbling. If The final tally reaches $12,000 (see below) I plan to extend my trip an extra week, to file additional stories and features from the refugee camps in and around Beirut. I'll also plan to spend a bit of extra time in Israel.

I became a journalist almost three decades ago, for one simple reason - injustice does my head in.
For the past decade and a half, most of my journalism has centred around the treatment of Aboriginal Australians. My interest in black affairs continues today.
In May 2014, I took over New Matilda. I did so partly because I admired the publication, but also because I believed it would provide me a platform to start writing about other issues I'm passionate about.
The plight of the Palestinians is one of them.
As a kid, I grew up reading John Pilger, and one of my life-long career goals has been to travel to Palestine and report on the region. This Pozible campaign is about finally realizing that dream... 28 years after I got my start in the media.
During the tour, I'll be filing regular, personal updates to the supporters of this Pozible campaign, with my impressions of the trip, and stories about the people that I meet. Those updates will be published later on New Matilda.
I'm also planning to film the trip and will be providing video blogs of my experience, as I travel.

How The Funds Will Be Used

My trip to Palestine in May this year will be guided by the hard-working folk at APAN (Australian Palestinian Advocacy Network). The trip is 14 days in duration.
The upfront cost of the APAN tour is $7,000. The additional $1,000 will cover small expenses.
If funds permit - i.e. if I raise at least $4,000 above the funding goal of $8,000 - I'm planning to head to Lebanon for an additional week, to report on and from the Palestinian refugee camps in and around Beirut.

The Challenges

Obviously, reporting from Palestine brings with it enormous challenges. There's no guarantee, for example, that the APAN tour will be able to enter Gaza. But APAN has scheduled visits to the West Bank and to Palestinian camps in Lebanon and Jordan, and it has alternative arrangements in place if the Gaza trip doesn't eventuate.
I'm genuinely going to Palestine with an open mind. I'm interested in the both the Palestinian and Israeli perspectives on the conflict. However, I'm most interested in the truth.
