New Matilda - one of Australia's most popular independent media sites - survives on the sniff of an oily rag. Most of our contributors - like Ben Eltham, Michael Brull, Lindsay Foyle, Fiona Katauskas, Costa A, Mathew Kenneally, Jordan Rivkin and Lucy Watson - receive an absolute pittance for their work.
Others, like Wendy Bacon, Amy McQuire, Geoff Holland, Ian McAuley, Dr Lissa Johnson, Dr Liz Conor, Geoff Russell, Jordan Sosnowski and Jordan Rivkin - provide their work for nothing. They write regularly for NM for the love of independent media. And that list doesn't include, of course, the hundreds of other writers who have contributed to New Matilda over the years, and continue to contribute today.
We hate not paying writers, and under-paying others for their work (our editor and contributing editor, plus our 'in house lawyer' for example, receive no wage for their work), but that's one of the unfortunate realities of small independent media.
This fundraiser is about improving that situation slightly for some of our contributors.

How The Funds Will Be Used
This fundraiser is 'round 2' for New Matilda. Late last year, we successfully fundraised $32,000 to employ a young Aboriginal writer, Jacob McQuire on a one-year cadetship. Jacob will officially join us in March this year.
Now we're turning our attention to securing a very modest contributor's budget for the first quarter of 2016, to give some of our regular writers and contributors some sense of security that they can rely on a set fee for their work each week.
The five writers we've identified for this campaign fundraiser are:
Amy McQuire was, until last year, NM's full-time senior journo. 'Smiles' moved back to her home state of Queensland to start a family, and files regularly for NM. She does it for no recompense because sh'e passionate about independent media. We want to be able to guarantee Amy a consistent fee for her contributions... which of course, will centre around Aboriginal affairs, but also weigh into a myriad of women's and social justice issues.
Michael Brull has been slaving away at NM for almost two years. We want to be able to pay Michael a consistent (albeit very modest) fee for two columns per week. Michael writes on a wide area of topics, but in particular on the Middle East, Aboriginal affairs and media. Michael completed his law degree late last year, and in our view is one of the most authoritative commentators on Middle Eastern affairs in Australia.
Clare and Jessie Stephens have been filing for NM since mid-2015. Like Michael, we want to be able to pay them a set, consistent fee which they can rely on every week (for a weekly column). Clare and Jessie also write on a variety of topics, but in particular social issues. Clare and Jessie are, in our view, enormously talented (and bloody entertaining writers). We're hoping to be able to pay Clare and Jessie for a weekly column.
Liam McLoughlin is a young writer who has filed occasionally for New Matilda during 2015. His special area of interest is around social justice issues. Liam is an exceptionally talented young writer (and researcher), and - like Clare and Jessie - trying to break into a full-time career in journalism. We're hoping to be able to raise enough to pay Liam a modest fee for two columns a week.
If we reach our target of $25,000, it will cover the costs of Amy, Michael, Clare, Jessie and Liam for three months. If we go over our $25,000 goal for the first quarter of 2016, we'll simply pay more contributors for more work, plus try and top up the (lousy) fees we currently pay some of our existing contributors.
