Sophie Hutchings is a pianist and composer from Sydney. She began teaching herself piano at an early age before any tuition, developing her unique style through countless hours of secret practice. One of her earliest compositions, 'Seventeen' is named after her age when it was written, and it eventually became the opening piece on Sophie's 2010 debut album, Becalmed. Sophie has released two more instrumental works to date, Night Sky and White Light, receiving fine recognition internationally for elegant and beautiful music compared to the likes of Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Peter Broderick and Dustin O’Hallloran. UK music bible Mojo had Becalmed as one of its top five independent releases for 2010, calling the album ‘grand’, ‘stirring’ and ‘vigorous’. The Guardian wrote that 'her rippling piano has an intimate, contemplative quality; sometimes melancholic, often with an exhilarating beauty, conjuring images from the edge of the listeners’ consciousness like something half-remembered in the middle of the night'. Other media have described Sophie's music as 'frankly amazing', 'unabashedly sincere' and 'always with a genuine sense of beauty'.




Sophie’s new album, Wide Asleep, is near completion. Wide Asleep marks an incredible step in Sophie’s compositions, writing her most dazzling and poignant pieces yet. Strings are provided by cellist Peter Hollo (Fourplay, Neil Gaiman) and violinst Jay Kong. Sophie produced Wide Asleep and the album was engineered by Tim Whitten, responsible for recording some of the most unique and atmospheric music of the last two decades by The Necks. We are giving  Wide Asleep the most fitting way to be released - in a beautiful, distinctive vinyl edition. Wide Asleep will contain images from renown Sydney photographer Jacob Ring, with design from the award-winning Mark Gowing. Jacob’s images will cover not only the front and back of the album, but the Preservation label will also include four more images inside the edition. It will be something to cherish.

Meeting our target, the Wide Asleep vinyl will be ready in the middle of 2016 on Preservation, with copies and their rewards sent to pledgers upon its release.

Your support in getting Wide Asleep in advance through your pledge to our Pozible campaign will go directly into producing the vinyl edition of Wide Asleep, quoted by manufacturers at a total of $5,775.00. Any further funds made will go toward mastering the album (at a cost of more than $1,000USD) as well as finalising production for the exclusive Drift release.

Making an instrumental album is a labour of love and a real joy, but it also costs a lot to make.
