The Stairwell Project

Live Music and Visual Art in a hospital makes so much sense. With a vision to bring Live Music and Visual Art into the public spaces and wards of the Royal Brisbane and Womens' Hospital, a six month volunteer experiment - with the full support of the hospital executive - began in June 2015. The Stairwell Project is driven by the notion and well researched evidence that live music and art is an essential element in the healing process and general well being of patients, staff and public in hospitals and medical centres.
Working with students, graduates and lecturers from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Queensland University of Technology, the University of Queensland and the Queensland College of Art [Griffith University] the project offered live music every Monday morning in the hospital stairwell, admissions department, campus cafes and Outpatient Cancer Chemo/Radiation Wards. Visual art was added towards the end of the 6 month trial project and noted harpist and Music Therapist Donald Hall began performing on Monday and Thursday afternoons. The Queensland Conservatorium of Music Centre of Research has expressed a very strong interest in working with the Stairwell Project in 2016. Their research will then be made available to hospital policy and budget departments.
Below is a pictorial and video record of some of our installations and performances.

How The Funds Will Be Used
Since June we have all been volunteers with the occasional parking fee [not fine!] paid for by Jugglers Art Space Inc
www.jugglers.org.au
The budget has been set at $56000 for 40 weeks at up to 10 hours/week.
Jugglers is currently working with the Royal Brisbane and Womens' Hospital on a cost share arrangement where the RBWH Foundation has been asked to raise 50% of the budget.
Jugglers will raise 25% through Pozible and a fund raising gig and auction on January 15, 2016 with the remaining 25% Pro Bono.
Our goal is to significantly reduce the 25% pro-bono fee in the light of the 2015 generous voluntary commitment of all the musicians and curator.
All of THESE artists [below] - and more - need to be valued as adding something of great depth and joy to the lives of patients, staff and visitors to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. Your generous donation will secure something significant and life changing for patients, staff, public and the remarkable musicians and artists of The Stairwell Project.

The Challenges
DEALING WITH THIS:
We have begun a conversation with each artist and musician around the time and commitment each person is able to make if the funds are not forthcoming.
2. Failure to see this as a key area of health service provision.
DEALING WITH THIS:
Partnership with the Queensland Conservatorium of Music's Centre for Research with a view to providing qualitative data outcomes on the benefits or The Stairwell Project to patients, staff and visitors.
5 Cup Coffee Pledge
There is no physical gift for this level of donation, only the sense that for the next 5 $4 coffees you buy you are making live music and visual art happen in a major Brisbane hospital. And we already know the powerful effect this has on health and well being.
Edgy art stair start
An artist associated with Jugglers will donate a small work - original or limited edition print for this donation. Well known graffiti artists, street artists, sculptors and photographers are all in the running for this amount.
Stairwell step up cup
Renton Bishopric is a prize winning ceramicist based on the Sunshine Coast [Queensland] who has also been an artist in residence at Jugglers Art Space and more recently in residence in South Korea with master ceramicists and potters in Seoul. To own one of his hand thrown and fired mugs [all one colour as below] in exchange for a $50 donation* to The Stairwell Project will be more than worth the effort and contribution to making a difference with music and art. *Aus only. Pick up or deliv.
Serious Stairwell-er
Free admission to one Paint it Red Concert at Jugglers Art Space in 2016 and a signed A4 photo of all the members of the 2015 core Stairwell Project team.
Stairwell to heaven
This amount will give you and yours a free one hour gig in your house by whoever is keen from the core or other members eg the Admissions Jazz Trio, Brisbane Guitar Quartet, Lachlan Hawkins or Steph and Hamish. You will supply drinks and nibbles and we will supply the music.
