Year Three! The Zine and Independent Comic Symposium, or ZICS, is a massive weekend long event held on August 22-23. We aim to support local & interstate zine and comic creators by providing a forum to meet, talk and celebrate the diversity within our mediums.
This is an opportunity for local artists to show their skills and wares and the chance for the wider community to find out about independent publishing and talent in Australia!
Last year saw the event draw a 3000 strong crowd proving this ain't no car boot sale style event. We want to take that success and continue to grow the festival for you, our audience.

Sweet as. The rewards this year are your key to cheaper entry to the Saturday night events which includes a super special Dr Sketchy's!
Doctor what??? Dr Sketchy's is costumed life drawing that features burlesque, alternative and comic models. You don't need drawing skills to join in or watch the entertainment. Drinks, tunes and prizes are up for grabs on the night!
If that wasn't enough, renowned artist, zinester and rapper HTML Flowers is bringing his lyrics, stories, poems and comics to the festival as well as performing at Saturday nights events.
For all you zine-making and comics scribbling maestros out there your table registrations can now be locked in. We’ve got table sizes for those bringing three zines or thirty. As a bonus, each table registration comes with a ticket to opening night. Party on!
If you're not sure if you want to register a table or grab a ticket just yet, there will be door sales and table registration closer to the date. BUT, if you pledge via Pozible, you'll not only be helping us work out what sort of budget we have to play with, you'll also score table registration and ticket sales at a cheaper rate.
It works out for everyone to get on board and spread the word now!
How The Funds Will Be Used
We are committed to keeping ZICS as accessible as possible, so it doesn't matter whether your a trustifarian or digging into the couch for loose change, we want you here!
The fair, panel talks, and some of the workshops are all free, leaving your dollars available to support local artists and take home some sweet sweet zine & comic loot.
The last two years of ZICS have shown us exactly what the bill for these large scale events comes to. Our do-it-yourself approach, creative problem solving and friendship with The Edge keeps the huge costs down, but our desire to transport the best in zine and comic creators and entertainment does have a price tag.
Costs to be covered by the $3000 raised through the Campaign include -
$1050.00 - Guests, performers, Saturday night entertainers and permits
$325.00 - T- shirt printing
$300.00 - Workshop Facilitators & Materials
$200.00 - Facebook promoted posts, other misc advertising
$200.00 – Crowd Funding reward postal costs
$160.00 - Pozible fees 5% total %20 Paypal transaction charges
$765.00- Bursary fund for travelling guests and financial support for to panellists
The Challenges
Going into our third year, we knew we wanted to stretch ourselves and do something a little bit different.
There's always been a great deal of work that goes into putting on ZICS. From the regular planning meetings, to coordinating logistics with the Edge, to illustration and design for posters, flyers, and other various press related malarkey, there's so much to take on!
Our team of volunteers have to get all of these things done along with juggling our regular commitments of full time work, study, and other obligations! But we love it!
