Emily Ulman Wears it Well
Patience the Flightless Bird (PTFB) asks, "How long has it been Emily? How long since you released your last album"*
*Oh btw, Patience the Flightless Bird is the name of the voice in my head. Not quite extinct, but definitely grounded.
Me (muttering): "It was 2007. Yeah a while ago."
PTFB: "It's 2015"
Me: Yeah I know.
PTFB: THAT'S 8 years! What have you been doing?
Me: You know what I've been doing. You've been there with me. Go away, I'm trying to write.
Anyway, in the second half of 2014 I set to work on my new album with Marty Brown (Clare Bowditch, Art of Fighting) at his gorgeous Stand Alone Studios in Coburg. It looked a lot like this:
Marty moved things around and I watched:
We chose leads and microphones:
I played guitar till I would dream :
PTFB: Is this gonna take much longer?
Me: I'm telling a story here. People want to know the background of how the record was made.
PTFB: I'm hungry.
Me: Same.
So then some of the best musicians and people I know came to play on the record. Richard Bradbeer (Eagle and the Worm, Dorsal Fins, The Bluebottles) came and laid down upright and electric bass.
Fraser A Gorman came in and shredded on the electric guitar:
And the fabulous Biddy Connor (Sailor Days, Laura Jean) played some heart-melting viola:
PTFB: What's for dinner?
Me: Shoosh, I'm trying to concentrate.
PTFB: Do you think people are still reading this?
And Oscar O'Bryan (Speed Painters) came in and blew his mighty trumpet:
And Adam Donovan (Augie March) came by:
PTFB: That's not Dono
Me: I know, I chose the wrong file. Hang on a sec.
PTFB: You really should stick to writing songs.
Me: You really should &*$^ yourself.
PTFB: They're really crap photos.
Me: I was trying to be inconspicuous so I didn't wig him out while he was playing.
PTFB: It shows.
And the wonderful and elusive John Dickson (Little John) came and played some harmonica:
.
I sang:
And also spent a really long time looking at Marty's back:
And feet:
And then when Marty had laid down some drums and organs and bits, and we had the album sounding just so, I took the tracks to the fabulous John Lee of Phaedra Studios (Lost Animal, Pikelet, Love of Diagrams) to add some more wee bits and mix 'Wear it Well'!
And that's kinda where I am right now:
PTFB: You did it again. You chose the wrong file, didn't you?
Me: Yes, but if you hadn't said anything they wouldn't have known.
PTFB: D'Angelo is really cute. I think you'll get away with it.
And here are some tracks from my previous albums to get you in le mood:
