Second location announced!
Help us reach $9600 to write CLOSE NAURU above parliament house in Canberra on the same day.
---
One year on from Reza Berati's death at Australia's Manus Island Offshore detention centre, Australia's asylum seeker policy has only become more inhumane. Vulnerable people seeking our help have been imprisoned for up to 18 months and counting. Neither the hunger strikes nor the revelations of the toxic conditions inside the camps seem to bother our cruel political leaders.
Help us write 'Shut down Manus' in the sky at 1pm on February 17th, the anniversary of Reza Berati's death. Let's show our condemnation of the way asylum seekers and refugees are being treated in Australia, and the very existence of our asylum seeker detention centres. While Manus is not the only immigration detention centre that we want closed, the focus on Manus Island is a strategic choice that will serve to represent all these inhumane camps both on- and offshore.
Due to its iconic location, the action will not only be a demand for the humane and rapid processing of asylum seeker claims, but also an international image of hope and solidarity for those inside the detention centres.. We ask our Sydney-based supporters to photograph and disseminate images on social media following the action. The exact location of the action will be revealed on the morning of February 17. All contributors to the campaign will be informed. If you cannot contribute, but wish to be informed, please send us a message with your email address.
All funds raised (minus Pozible and Paypal fees) will be paid to the sky writer to complete the job. We are not using the funds for any other purpose (e.g. fees, publicity, photography).
Who we are
This action is being organised by three individuals, unaligned with any groups, organisations or political parties. Just three people who are appalled by how the Australian government is treating asylum seekers and refugees, and feel moved to take some action. In the interest of transparency, our names are Gabrielle de Vietri, Asha Bee Abraham and Will Foster, but it doesn't really matter.
If the weather is unsuitable, the action will be held on the next suitable day.
