We love apocalypse fiction, but we rarely find characters with disability, chronic illness and other impairments in these stories. When they do appear, they usually die early on, or are secondary characters undeveloped into anything more than a burden to the protagonist. We believe that disabled characters have a far more interesting story to tell in post-apocalyptic/dystopian fiction, and we want to create an anthology sharing those stories.

We want to create an anthology that is varied, especially among protagonists, with characters experiencing all kinds of disability from physical impairments, chronic illnesses, mental illnesses and/or neurodiverse characters. There will also be a variety of stories, including those that are fun or sad, adventurous or horrific, etc, but we are avoiding stories in which the character’s condition is the primary focus of the narrative.
The stories in Defying Doomsday will look at periods of upheaval from new and interesting perspectives. We want to share narratives about characters with disability, characters with chronic illnesses and other impairments, surviving the apocalypse and contending with the collapse of life as they know it.
Defying Doomsday will be available in paperback and DRM-free ebook (in multiple formats). An exclusive hardcover edition will be available only to Pozible backers.

Stretch Goals
We want to be as inclusive as we can with this anthology and that means making the finished product as accessible as possible. We would love to produce an audiobook, but to do so to a professional standard costs more than our original budget allows. If we reach this stretch goal we will be able to produce a professional quality, studio-recorded audiobook. If we reach this goal, everyone who has pledged $10 or higher will receive an audiobook version of the anthology.

About the Authors

A lifelong Amsterdammer, Corinne Duyvis spends her days writing speculative young adult and middle grade novels. She enjoys brutal martial arts and gets her geek on whenever possible. Otherbound, her YA fantasy debut, released from Amulet Books/ABRAMS in the summer of 2014. She is a co-founder of Disability in Kidlit and team member of We Need Diverse Books.

John Chu is a microprocessor architect by day, a writer, translator, and podcast narrator by night. His fiction has appeared or is forthcoming at Boston Review, Uncanny, Asimov's Science Fiction, Apex Magazine and Tor.com. His story "The Water That Falls on You from Nowhere" won the 2014 Hugo Award for Best Short Story.

Janet Edwards lives in England. As a child, she read everything she could get her hands on, including a huge amount of science fiction and fantasy. She studied Maths at Oxford, and went on to suffer years of writing unbearably complicated technical documents before deciding to write something that was fun for a change. She has a husband, a son, a lot of books, and an aversion to housework. Janet is the author of the Earth Girl trilogy.

Seanan McGuire was the winner of the 2010 John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, and her novel Feed (as Mira Grant) was named as one of Publishers Weekly’s Best Books of 2010. In 2013 she became the first person ever to appear five times on the same Hugo Ballot. Her Newsflesh series, written as Mira Grant and beginning with the novel Feed, is set post-zombie apocalypse on a US presidential campaign trail, and features a character suffering from light sensitivity.
*The Defying Doomsday Award
Pledge(s) at the Patron of Diversity level will contribute to the creation of a special award for disability advocacy. This award will recognise work in disability advocacy in SFF literature. Eligible works will include, but are not limited to: fiction, non fiction, writing, editing, publishing, reviewing, and podcasting.
Nominations will be encouraged to be submitted to the jury via the Defying Doomsday website in October of each year (starting in 2016), with the winner being announced on the website in December of that year.
The Defying Doomsday Award will be an annual shortlist and prize. The award jury will comprise Twelfth Planet Press publisher, Alisa Krasnostein, and Defying Doomsday editors, Tsana Dolichva and Holly Kench.
The award will grant one winner per year for three years a cash prize of $200 in recognition of their work in disability advocacy in SFF literature. For each additional patron who pledges at this level, a further $200 will be added to the prize fund for each year. We reserve the right to discuss with the patrons how the additional money will expand the award (for example, it may be used for a bigger cash prize for the winner, or for additional cash prizes for additional runners-up).
How The Funds Will Be Used
1) Pay our authors the Professional Market rate of US 7¢/word.
2) Edit, design, format, print, and ship the books.
3) Produce and ship all the reward items.
If we surpass our primary funding goal, the additional funds will go to paying our production team more than the base rate and to fulfilling our stretch goals.

Overfunding is a good thing! It means you support publishing more great stuff like Defying Doomsday. Your contribution is key to the ongoing success of a boutique publisher of excellent and diverse genre fiction. It makes you part of the Twelfth Planet family.
We have also been fortunate enough to receive approval for a Crowbar Grant from Arts Tasmania, which will grant us an additional $2000 if our campaign funds.
The Challenges

Delays in editing and/or production are always a possibility, of course. Our ultimate goal is to provide you with a quality product. We will keep backers in the loop during the entire process, and if any problems crop up, we will let you know, and tell you what we're doing to resolve them.
