THE GIFT is a short film about Louis, a disarmingly quiet 7-year-old boy, who lives with his father in a glass house in the Australian Bush. Louis’s Father is busy and preoccupied by everyday things but is forced to stop and take notice of his son when he sees strange markings on the young boy’s hands. Louis whispers that he cannot tell his father what made the marks, only show him. Thus father and son begin a journey through the bush that will change them forever. "The Gift" evokes the mystery and menace of the Australian landscape, exploring the transformative power of familial love.
This is the third short film that we have produced together. Our first short film, "The Love Song of Iskra Prufrock" won 12 international and domestic awards and screened at over 60 film festivals around the world. We were thrilled THE GIFT was one of five projects to be funded through Screen NSW's Emerging Filmmaker Fund. However, the budget is very tight and to achieve our vision for this film we need your support. We will use the additional funds to pay for :-
(i) the creation of our Beast - a pivotal character we are building with a prosthetics studio
(ii) live butterflies which are being grown especially for the film and which we will release in the beautiful climatic scene at the end of the film
(iii) additional specialist film equipment
(iv) a haunting sound track with a bush soundscape, using the sounds and acoustic noises emitted by trees and other living organisms in the bush, integrated with an original music score.
We are in pre-production now with shooting to begin on 20 March. This is followed by 10 weeks of post production in picture and sound. Our film will be completed by 10 June 2013 and we look forward to sharing it with you.
Our goal is to enter our film into A-list domestic and international films such as Berlin, Cannes and Sundance to showcase the unique voice and vision of Lucy as writer/director. We have a feature film in development and gaining a profile through festival screenings is essential in progressing our feature film into production and raising Lucy's profile, both at home and internationally.
