We've watched the rise of smart wearables for years, and noticed one critical problem - they're made for men, or for sports, but are rarely the kind of thing you'd wear with a dress or for a formal occasion. Smart, yes, but elegant, no. We love the tracking and data that smart devices offer, but wearing a plastic wristband isn't very appealing.

Our group is studying smart wearable devices for years, but I gradually find that my friends start to get boring for them. They don't want to wear it when they wear a dress, or formal suit. It does not look elegant. For women, we more like to wear jewelry instead of a plastic wristband.

Say goodbye to bulky smart wristbands and watches - Ibijous is smart jewelry and the most beautiful smart wearable you're likely to see. We designed it for every woman to wear for every occasion.

Precision

Jewelry-making and electronics-design are worlds apart in terms of precision requirements. While jewelry crafting generally requires a precision range of ±0.3~0.5mm, electronics require a far more exacting ±0.03~0.05mm. Seamlessly incorporating the electronic and jewelry elements of the pieces was incredibly challenging.

Rechargeable?

Most smart devices use rechargeable batteries, which have higher reusability but need to be recharged once a week (or sometimes daily!) We wanted our product to be used as much like normal jewelry as possible, with minimum interruption by charging cycles, so we designed it for use with disposable batteries which have a use cycle of up to 4 months. 

Data Collection

We consulted physicians to determine what a truly useful, healthful lifestyle tracking system should look like. From this, we created a personalised profile which calculates recommended activity and calorie intake based on your age and size, and helps you track how you're doing on a daily basis.

Trial and error

A lot of ideas were developed and then discarded through the design process. A screen for alerts and buttons to dismiss seem to be a requirement for contemporary smart devices, but we felt these made the design chunky and awkward - not to mention obviously a smart device. To maintain the clean aesthetics of jewelry, we did away with all but the necessary monitors, and used the linked phone App in place of a screen on the device itself.
