So, who are we?
Mzaza is a six-piece world music band based in Brisbane, Australia. Our sound is anchored in group members’ French-Sephardic and Balkan origins and influenced by our love of Gypsy and Middle Eastern music. We believe cultural differences make the world richer and we like to celebrate this wealth through our music.
Our singer Pauline’s search for musicians who could play songs inspired by her background prompted the band’s first incarnation in 2004, when she met other founding member Greta Kelly. Now the band also includes Stephen Cuttriss, Jordan Stamos, John Robertson, Chloe Ann Williamson, and many guests and friends.
Fast forward 9 years, two releases, and many tours later - our band is now an army of musicians and composers who are passionate about what they do and love connecting with audiences wherever they go. We work hard to keep developing our music and to share it with audiences everywhere.
So far our hard work has paid off. We have showcased at the Australasian World Music Expo, received Queensland Music Award nominations for our 2011 album Journey Over Skin, played amazing festivals, received support from the Australian media, and met some wonderful people around Australia. We are so grateful to everyone who supports us and comes to our shows
The next step for us is to put our new songs out into the world to gather the support needed for a bigger Australian tour as well as an overseas tour. We are really excited about this!
We have prepared some very special songs which we are ready to record. Many are originals, some are re-worked traditional songs. Most are in French and in our singer’s ancestors' language, Ladino. Some feature collaborations with artists we love, both from Australia and overseas that we will reveal... very soon!
Working on the album is legendary engineer Pix and Aria nominated engineer Robin Mai (Melbourne Ska Orchestra, John Butler, Blue King Brown). We are putting together a publicity team we know will have to the skills to get the album to audiences far and wide. We feel confident that we have everything in place, all we need now is your help.

Here is a video of us playing one of the songs we are going to record, Fire in my Blood. This track is based on a traditional Turkish tune from Anatolia. We added some new parts to it and Pauline wrote lyrics in French. The song is about getting over a broken heart, or the light after the darkness.

The Band
Pauline Maudy
Pauline is our resident French singer. She loves animals, food, and all things creative. She is a key songwriter in Mzaza and also leads all the management activities for the band thanks to skills she has picked up doing as much as she possible could in the Arts. She has worked on everything from festivals to movies and manages community projects. On tour she can be found drinking expresso martinis or coordinating promo for the next show, or both!
Jordan Stamos
Jordan is our percussive power and our equivalent of urbanspoon - he always knows where the best cafes are! He is a brilliant player, has a fantastically disturbed sense of humour and knows how to be a great friend. On tour he can be found test tasting the local specialties and searching for his tenth coffee, or stalking echidnas
John Robertson
John is the Spanish guitar maestro, the lone wonderer and the kind heart. He isn't the loudest but always has great things to say. He has written a lovely new song for our album. On tour he has a tendency to go wandering.. like that time he slept in some Tasmanian forest and came back with words of wisdom and a face full of wonderment.
Stephen Cuttriss
Stephen holds the title for being the youngest member the band has ever had as well as the most musically diverse. He seems to be able to play... anything! In Mzaza he plays accordion, kaval, and ney. He has composed some beautiful songs for the band and has known everyone for so long it feels a bit like family. On tour he can be found climbing mountains and discovering new horizons
Greta Kelly
Greta is a brilliant violinist and a true lover of people, as well as one of the original members of Mzaza. She is also a lover of exotic instruments (she plays the Kamanche Tarhu or Shah Keman, which she learned in Iran), a keen traveller, and an unstoppable organising force in the band. On tour she can be found seamlessly running logistics, discovering great new songs for us to play or meeting new friends!
Chloe Ann Williamson
Chloe has a passion for classical music, cats, and tango. She is our rock on the double bass, our country girl with a big heart. She likes to laugh and cares for others. On tour she can be found causing mischief or searching for the perfect delicacy. She is almost as passionate about food as Jordan! But then again, this is a band of foodies.

How The Funds Will Be Used
We are raising $7,500 of $15,000 (we have already saved $7,500 from playing shows over the last six months).
