Am I still dreaming? Is this r e a l ?
This distant dream formed more than 7 years ago, a deeply held desire to travel back to my Motherland. To live in Sri Lanka for the first time, learn my mother tongue, connect with my culture and seek traditional creative knowledge. I was stuck in a post-colonial feedback loop and I needed to break out. I wound up my Australian life, completing ‘Larry’s Last Loop’ hitchhiking tour around Australia over 8 months last year. Performing at festivals and other events in around Australia and finally in Darwin where I would search for north bound sailing boats.

It took two months of focused searching before I found any leads. That small boat heading for West Kupang, Indonesia was my first unpleasant passage. Six months of overland travelling and searching eventually landed me into the port of Galle, Sri Lanka via the magnificent sailing vessel Blue Star.
Since arriving I have managed to seek out the right teachers for my needs and secure my residency visa. The final step to realising this dream is to secure study funding for my next three years living here. That’s where you come in! Well, you and the people you share this with       - but I’m not just asking you for money –
I’m asking: Do you support this journey? Do you accept what I’m doing? Is reverse migration valid? Is this real? I’d love to hear what you think. There are options listed below for supporting in non-financial ways as well.

** update ** we've hit the tipping point and to celebrate we have this fresh new clip linking Melbourne and Colombo with a curious story

How The Funds Will Be Used

So far - I've backed myself. In 2013, I'm proud to say I saved for this trip doing music: working hard managing myself as a solo performer and teaching workshops. Playing all kinds of gigs from busking on the street, to cafes, restaurants, festivals, playing in libraries (Only in Darwin!). I ran the "Looping Playshops" in Schools, at festivals, in Libraries, in Indigenous communities and even as part of musical therapy in a Central Australian alcohol rehab center. Having a lifestyle without the cost of rent or much transport means that this is a lot of money.

This is primarily an education fund. Supporting my studies of Sinhala language, Classical vocal music studies and Hatha Yoga practice. The base figure of $1900 covers approximately 18 months of these studies. Some additional items are film costs for the Mothertongue Knowledge clip, the 3x clip CM Sessions filmed in Thailand (see Hold On below) and some basic production costs to help produce my first full album. The stretch goal of $3000 covers three years of study plus these additional production costs. Check out the proposed budget here, and look at the other tab of actual costs from the Journey.
Any super stretch goals of $3000+ (wo!) would go into the following based on dialogue with you – my ‘funding body’. A ‘Mothertongue Knowledge’ short film – working with Odyssey Studio again to flesh out this small clip into a short film with more footage, music and poetry approaching 10 mins in length. A gear upgrade: My boomerang looper, whilst rock solid and super capable for its size, does have some limitations. Despite thriving on the simplicity so far – I would be interested in upgrading my gear to a looper with 5 loops and some FX.  Shot recently in Phuket, with french film maker and photo journalist : Christian Mouchet (fotocom agency). Im hping to re-coupe the cost for this clip with the stretch goal of the campaign.

Non m o n e t a r y Contributions. Not feeling cashed up? don't have a credit card? I would love you to consider these options.
* Jump onto your networks and share this campaign, there's some shareable tools near the video at the top. D o n ' t  just slap it up on your FB page, if you can take some time to write something about your connection to the campaign and/or my journey and then tag a small handful of potentially interested friends. That would be stellar! Or blog, email, tweet and talk about it. A few times? ;)
*Use my campaign image as your FB header to show support whilst this campaign is live, link into the campaign in the description/comments.
* Assist with your knowledge, research skills or resource. I am currently studying: Sinhalese Language, music theory, hopefully Tamil language too and continuing my creative practice. C o m p u t e r Assistance : am grateful for any help with web 2.0, social media and web stuff for this campaign and beyond.
* Offer you skill or creativity or knowledge or item as a further incentive for me to offer locally to people in their local area. I'm really hoping this element will make this campaign a beautiful human interaction and not just items posted across the globe to encourage donations.

The Challenges

C h a l l e n g e ? Ah, where do i begin?!?! It was a rather mammoth challenge just getting here. The extended costs of the Motherland Voyage are listed on the second tab above. Aside from that practical drain, the psychology of embarking on something like this is all-consuming and there was so many points along the way where I questioned if I would make it this way, or would I be just an overland fool? Finally forced to fly. Until I left Thailand on Blue Star I could never be sure I would get all the way here overland and sea.

After arriving and spending 3 months living here, I’ve encountered many challenges as some who looks like they should know the language – but has less speaking ability than most children. Several confronting and frustrating situations around learning language in this context as an adult make it a real challenge.

Vocal jazz but with more than a dash of rock must be one of the hardest niche markets to break into. So it is with Rosie and the Bees, whose eponymously titled debut album makes a very brave stab at the scene.. the main focus is on Rosie herself, a talented singer and multi-instrumentalist, although here she restricts her extra-vocal talents to bass guitar, double bass and sitar. http://www.rosiehenshaw.com/ https://www.facebook.com/rosiehenshawmusic
