I'm Jarrad Redden, ruckman from the Port Adelaide Football Club, I'm raising funds for friend, Matthew Sinclair, who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident in January this year. My sister was a passenger in the vehicle but escaped with a few cuts and bruises. I'm currently recovering from knee surgery but this is inconsequential compared to what our friend Matt and his family are going through. I've decided to ride 220 kms from Hampstead Rehab centre, where Matthew is a patient, to his home town of Edithburgh in the hope of raising at least $20,000 for important rehabilitation equipment that will help Matthew with his long road to recovery. We'd love to go above that figure with every dollar raised going toward's helping Matthew's rehab.
Please see below Matthew's mum, Jenny Sinclair's account of how our friend's life changed in an instant on January 8, this year.
Matt Sinclair was a strong honest , and hard working young man who was in his third year apprenticeship as a heavy diesel mechanic in Yorketown . He was a great footballer, playing since the age of 8yrs old . Basketball was a passion of his as well as dirt bike riding , surfing, swimming fishing and hanging out with his mates . He had great work ethic always doing over-time and helping out . He lived at home.
On January 8th 2014 he was taking his friend Alicia Redden back home on a dirt road at dusk when he approached a corner . As he drove around it the sun hit them full on in their eyes and he didn't realize that the road straightened, causing him to go off the road and the ute rolled several times . Fortunately Alycia was conscious and rang her mum who then informed the authorities .
Matt suffered severe a traumatic brain injury and a double fractured arm , He was flown straight to the RAH and was in intensive care for 3 1/2 weeks then transferred to the neurosurgery ward where he underwent a total of 5 operation, 15 ct scans, 4 MRI scans and countless chest X-rays .
His state of consciousness varied through out this time, he also had a tracheotomy to help him breathe .
Matty left the RAH on 30th may and is now residing at Hampstead rehabilitation centre having constant physio therapy, and speech therapy. I am constantly by his side massaging willing and prompting him in hope that he will soon start responding to us .
His journey will be a very long hard one, with no-one being able to give us any real direction on his prognosis .
As Matt was in a single car accident , the MAC third party insurance we all have to pay will not cover Matt for any ongoing therapy and loss of income.
Also Matty misses out in being eligible for the new lifetime support system which rolls out on July 1st 2014 because his accident was before this date.
How The Funds Will Be Used
The money will be used to purchase a quadriciser motorized therapy system that stimulates the brain and improves muscie function.
The machine cost approximately $20,000 and allows for simulated walking while patients are either sitting or laying down.
The Challenges
I've stared riding as part of my recovery from knee surgery and will need to be monitored by the Port Adelaide Football Club medical staff to see how I'm tracking.
