A Saucy Little Secret is a powerful piece of cabaret theatre by Perth based Melanie Bainbridge, following the lives of five strong women whose music and attitudes influenced the development of modern blues, queer lifestyle and racial tolerance.
Famous not only for their music, but also for their progressive and alternative attitudes to sexuality, race issues and relationships, Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Gladys Bentley, Ethel Waters and Alberta Hunter transcended childhoods marred by rape, abuse and desperate poverty to break into the music scene through the buffet flats and rent houses of Harlem; each becoming successful and wealthy recording artists in their own right.
Performed by a beautiful ensemble cast of Perth's most influential performers and musicians, including Paula Parore, Libby Hammer, Ofa Fotu, Natalie Gillespie, Harry Deluxe and Magnus Danger Magnus; backed by a talented blues band supported ably by up-and-coming musical director Leah Van der Meulen, and set against artistic renditions of 1920’s Harlem by Perth artist Jenna Downing, audiences can be assured of being seduced by some of the sauciest performers in the country.

After two critically acclaimed Perth seasons at the famed Ellington Jazz Club, and a dream run at the 86 for the 2013 Melbourne Cabaret Festival, the cast and crew of A Saucy Little Secret are determined to take up this opportunity to connect with their most empathetic audience.

This production is the first out of Perth for many years to seriously and critically explore the struggles lesbian or bisexual women throughout history, to bring their stories to the fore, and to express in performance and music some of the almost insurmountable trials they faced to bring their music to the world - and you can help us to make sure these stories are heard.

How The Funds Will Be Used
We've been invited to perform at both the Melbourne and Sydney Fringe Festivals in September and October 2014. We are performing at Revolt in Melbourne and our Sydney venue is 'coming soon'!
We will be using these funds to travel and accommodate our huge Perth cast and crew in Sydney and Melbourne. There are 12 people in our show - and thus our travelling costs are high (well in excess of $10,000) - and as yet, despite the undeniable calibre of the performers involved in this project - and the acclaim and positive reviews the show has gathered over its 4 previous four seasons, we have never yet been awarded any state funding to support our production.
We have been so lucky that our adoring fans and friends and family have had such faith in our project - that they've helped us keep this show on the road - and this time we even have the opportunity to get our show in front of some incredibly influential promoters, producers and venue owners, which is one of our main reasons for taking up this opportunity.
We've put immense amounts of time and resources (and in particular emptied our own shallow pockets) into this production - and we value hugely our incredible supportive arts community, who have consistently backed our production, and given it a life of three years and four successful seasons.. and we hope many more both at home and overseas.
For many Perth theatre ventures, taking productions to the Eastern States to highlight our talented performers can be extremely difficult, particularly in light of the difficulties in obtaining funding from our own state and national funding institutions. For us, it's even more difficult than most, as we travel, accommodate and feed a huge cast...
But sometimes all you really need is someone to open the door!

So this beautiful Perth show family, which comprises of some of Perth’s best loved and most renown singers and performers, is calling on our generous supporters to invest in the future of our production by donating this ‘pozible’ campaign which will support flights and accommodation for the show.
Of course - if our generous donors support us even further than our Pozible request, we will continue to allocate funds towards flights and accommodation, and, if we're REALLY lucky, put any additional funds towards production costs, artist fees and equipment hire.

OK... let's be honest... travelling cross-country with a cast of 11... seriously shouldn't be a picnic - but we have so much fun on our tours and performances that we think of our show as an opportunity for our close-knit little creative family to spend some quality time, have lots of laughs and bring something spectacular to the world... So we can't pretend that the touring is hard work!
But what is hard work is finding the funding to tour such a large cast and crew, pay venue hire fees, find backline and equipment and beg, borrow and steal all the 'stuff' that a high quality production needs to get itself on the stage!
So the biggest challenges for us are of course, the fundraising and tour logistics - which we're hoping our adoring and adorable network will help us out with.
We have two terrific fundraising shows coming up at the Ellington Jazz Club in Perth - 4th July and 15th August - which will bring our wonderful performers together to sing the songs from the show (and their other sexy, bluesy favourites), reveal some of the secrets of their Saucy characters, sell the show album and generally show our wonderful Perth supporters a rollicking good time.
