In my bedroom, tucked in the back of a cupboard, is a small silver suitcase I've spent the best part of two decades lugging around. It is full to the brim with mementos - semi precious scraps of paper; folded holiday brochures and unsent postcards - pieces of the past I no longer need, but am too scared to throw away.
What happens to these memories?
Where do mementos go when they die?
The Museum of Intimate Memories offers audiences the opportunity to liberate their keepsakes.
Selected to take part in the new festival FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY, throughout September a tiny booth will pop up in various locations around Alice Springs, inviting community members to exchange their mementos for a private tour of the museum's collection, curated from the memorabilia donated by visitors before them.
As the month of September draws to a close, the entire collection of mementos will be archived in ash as part of the FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY fire burial. I need your help to preserve the stories behind these objects through the creation of a limited edition poster catalogue. The catalouge, including delicate hand drawn sketches of mementos and deliciously personal snippets of stories will be lovingly printed on a risograph and printed nationally.
The festival, FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY, is where this new work will be unveiled. This festival, which will be held this September in Alice Springs, has been created by the creative team Elephant Island and the ARI (Artist Run Initiative) Watch This Space.

The festival looks to showcase the unique, DIY, desert art community that is thriving in Central Australia; while at the same time drawing in various emerging artists from around Australia to participate in the festival.
With your help, I will be one of the key emerging artists that participates and also acts as an assistant coordinator in putting on the festival.

Free BBQ Cash Give Away's exciting funding situation
we have had some exciting news:
Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia, every dollar you give will be matched up to $2,000 through their Match: Crowdfunding for the Independent Arts Sector initiative.

This means that every dollar you donate is sort of like two dollars! Hooray!
In addition to this matched funds campaign, there are also eight other individual artists from around Australia aiming to raise $1,000 each for their involvement in FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY.
These fellow-Pozible artists are the key collaborating artists who had initially volunteered their time free of charge and it looks like , if we can get our Pozible campaigns off the ground, they wont all be condemned to mee-goreng sandwiches for the month of September.
As thrilled as we are about the matched funds program, the funding does come with a catch - which is - if any of the nine Pozible campaigns for FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY fail, then none of the raised funds will be matched. Which means that if one of the campaigns misses it's target by $1 none of the funds will be matched.....
How The Funds Will Be Used
The funds that I hope to raise through the Pozible will be spent on covering costs involved in the production of a limited edition poster catalogue and archiving some of the articles encased in the Museum of Intimate Memories.
For $1000
I will be able to engage a graphic designer to produce a hand crafted catalogue to eternally archive the Museum of Intimate Memories most cherished mementos. An ultra limited edition of these (just 99 copies!) will be lovingly printed on a risograph and distributed nationally.
For $1500
I will save me from raiding my piggy bank to cover expenses for the Museum Construction and also engage an illustrator to produce all catalogue artwork in hand-drawn mediums.
For $2000
I'll produce another 99 copies of the catalogue to be released "wild' onto the streets of a city, town or community near you and be able to put on a remarkable celebration of memory in Sydney (which lovely supporters will be invited to!)
For $3000
I will be able to travel with the Museum to a location near you....and do it all over again.....
The way in which the matched funds are being divided between the artists is very simple, the funds raised through the individual Pozible campaigns will go straight to the individual artists. Which means if I am fortunate to raise an amount over my funding target, these funds will go to me to assist in covering my costs associated with materials, travel, vegemite and toast. The funds that are to be matched, which is a maximum amount of $1,000 being matched for this campaign, will go towards covering some of the other costs of putting on the festival.
The Challenges
We'll make it if we all hold hands....
No, really.
The truth is that this whole project relies on other people - promoting interconnectedness between strangers and blurring the boundaries between artist and audience is EXACTLY what this project is about. I'll be putting a whole bunch of my personal memories on display (which in itself will be challenging) and inviting people to join in. The challenge is that this relies on the participation of the audience for the project to eventuate.
With your help we can make this project stretch beyond the desert in every direction, taking these small stories into shops, homes and alleyways across the country.
A prime position on the FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY honour board. At 12 noon every day of the festival, a sound effect .wav of a cannon firing shall play and all those present will salute the honour board. Your effort shall not go unnoticed! Plus, thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia your $10 support will be matched $ for $, and you could think of it as $20 victory for community art projects around the world.
