We are Bat Hazzard, a band from the desert of Central Australia.

We formed at the end of 2012 just as the worst mouse plague in living memory was sweeping through our town, and a federal task force had begun patrolling the streets locking up out-of-control youth. Since then, we have released our debut EP, toured Europe, made a film clip, toured the East Coast of Australia, played rad festivals like Wide Open Spaces, Blacken the Globe and Island Vibe, as well as set up a studio in the gritty city of Melbourne. We are self-managed, independent artists and we just released our second EP The Water The Water.

We have been invited to return to the desert to participate in Elephant Island's festival FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY (FBCG) this September at the ARI Watch This Space Art Gallery in Alice Springs. For this, we will be designing and building the most ambitious stage set we have played within to date - a replica of the Bat Caves. The Bat Caves are a delicate network of conglomerate rock caverns situated south of Alice Springs - most people don't even know they are there, and so don't get an opportunity to see this fragile geological wonder first hand (except bogans who like to go there and light fireworks inside the caves). The caves have been an interest of the band since Stephanie Harrison (aka Hazzard) did a Geography assignment on them in Year 12 and have become our major source of inspiration. So we want to recreate it for YOU! The FBCG show will bring an experiential and live conceptual element to our musical performance, inviting the audience to become part of the performance while we play.

To make this possible, we need your support! We will also be participating at a number of different events throughout the festival, as well as taking a hands on role in getting this festival going so please help us get back to the desert where we belong

The festival, FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY looks to showcase the unique, DIY, desert art community that is thriving in Central Australia; while at the same time drawing in various emerging artists from around Australia to participate in the festival. It will run for three weeks and see a huge sculpture stage created inside the gallery, with events planned throughout the festival to get as many people as possible down to Watch This Space. Stay tuned!

This is the festival:

Our funding situation

Initially this project was going to be put on completely through volunteer hours and begged/ borrowed/ stolen materials. However,
we have had some exciting news:

Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia, every dollar you give will be matched up to $1000 through their Match: Crowdfunding for the Independent Arts Sector initiative.

This means that every dollar you donate is sort of like two dollars! Hooray!

In addition to this matched funds campaign, there are also seven other individual artists from around Australia aiming to raise $1,000 each for their involvement in FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY, as well as Elephant Island who are looking to raise $2000. These fellow-Pozible artists are the key collaborating artists who had initially volunteered their time free of charge. The opportunity to take part in the matched funds program means that these artists can now be fairly payed for their time, and also have the scope to be more ambitious with their projects. As this group is made up of mostly emerging artists, we feel that the matched funds opportunity has acted like a sort of instant karma for a group of amazing artists that never fail to throw themselves into projects despite often going unpaid.

As thrilled as we are about the matched funds program, the funding does come with a catch - which is - if any of the nine Pozible campaigns for FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY fail, then none of the raised funds will be matched. Which means that if one of the campaigns misses it's target by $1 none of the funds will be matched......it's scary.....

How The Funds Will Be Used

Although most of the money we are trying to raise will go on diesel driving between Darwin and Alice Springs, we have had a fantasy that we might actually surpass our goal. Here's what our daydream and target commitments are:

FOR $1000 ...
We will get matched funding ... awesome! The project will happen and everyone will be happy. We will use the money we raise to pay for travel expenses as we leg it from Darwin (post-Indonesia tour) to Alice Springs and do what we do best. We will build an actual cave completely out of reclaimed cardboard and recycled objects within which we will play.

FOR $1500 ...
We will pay legend video artist Ben Ward to put on his psychedelic visual nightmare machine while we are playing.

FOR $2000
We will make matching outfits to wear while we play with the design of our EP as the pattern ... we will most likely end our gig wearing nothing.

The Challenges

We have to drive from the Top End to the desert with all our worldly possessions, our three-year old kid and a ute-load of band gear to play this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity... if we DON'T get funding ... it ... won't ... happen. If we DO get funding, the project will happen, we will get to play, and the more money we get, the more cool shit we can do. Yew!

Love...
Bat Hazzard
