Help me grind LIVE in Alice Springs

A$1,800
of $1,000 targetyrs ago
Successful on 29th Jun 2014 at 3:35AM.
I am totally stoked to be invited to be part of  FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY...the new 3 week, rad, mini arts festival being held in Alice Springs this September.

My work as a metal artist and photographer has been greatly influenced through my experiences working in remote parts of Central Australia and I see this new project as a chance to take my art to the next level. Hopefully with your support I can bring my idea to life and bring my live 'Grind' back home to the desert in September.

The festival has been created by the creative team Elephant Island with the help of the Alice Springs ARI, Watch This Space. FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY aims to celebrate the unique, DIY, desert contemporary arts community that is thriving in Central Australia; while at the same time drawing in various emerging artists from around Australia to participate in the festival.

FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY will run for three weeks, with the first two weeks looking to activate Watch This Space into an open-studio collaboration between the local and interstate artists all working together with a variety of different community groups, organisations and individuals to create a stage-space within the gallery. The last week of the festival will be a packed week of curated events using the created space.

With your help I will not only be one of the key emerging artists that participates in the collaborative project, but I will also have an active role in coordinating the festival.

Our funding situation

Initially this project was going to be put on completely through volunteer hours and begged/ borrowed/ stolen materials. However,
we have had some exciting news:

Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia, every dollar you give will be matched up to $1000 through their Match: Crowdfunding for the Independent Arts Sector initiative.

This means that every dollar you donate is sort of like two dollars! Hooray!

In addition to this matched funds campaign, there are also seven other individual artists from around Australia aiming to raise $1,000 each for their involvement in FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY, as well as Elephant Island who are looking to raise $2000. These fellow-Pozible artists are the key collaborating artists who had initially volunteered their time free of charge. The opportunity to take part in the matched funds program means that these artists can now be fairly payed for their time, and also have the scope to be more ambitious with their projects. As this group is made up of mostly emerging artists, we feel that the matched funds opportunity has acted like a sort of instant karma for a group of amazing artists that never fail to throw themselves into projects despite often going unpaid.

THE CATCH
As thrilled as we are about the matched funds program, the funding does come with a catch - which is - if any of the nine Pozible campaigns for FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY fail, then none of the raised funds will be matched. Which means that if one of the campaigns misses it's target by $1 none of the funds will be matched......it's scary.....

My project within the project

GRINDING at FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY
I want to find 2 old cars with awesome textures and colours and place them in a public space in Alice Springs. Its going to be a mission to find suitable cars to cut up with my angle grinder that will eventually end up in the gallery Watch This Space.

The desert works magic on the cars abandoned in the landscape. This process of deterioration produces the most extraordinary characteristics and textures. These diamonds in the rough would just be sitting out bush on their own until I came along with a grinder. In the past, I roamed the desert in search of suitable cars to angle grind off panels that would eventually wind up in a gallery... This time I want to bring the cars to my audience so that the viewer can see how it all happens....be part of the action.

STAGE 1 - For $1000
I want to create a hardcore live public performance together with local Alice Springs band, Bat Hazzard, to bring to life the grungey spectacle of the grinding of these cars … I want as many people to be part of it as possible....a free party open to everyone.
 Saskia Folk

Bat Hazzard are the perfect band to accompany such a spectacle. Their music is rad, tough and has roots in Alice Springs. I am excited to work with them coz they are such a creative force that demands respect. I plan to angle grind panels off the cars at dusk while Bat Hazzard play LIVE on top of the cars! With the theatrics of the band and sparks of the angle grinder... surely it will be a blast.
Costs will go to recovering the cars and productions costs of the performance.

STAGE 3 -For $1500
I want to film the car wrecks arriving at site, people interacting with wrecks and performance/gig, and make it into a 5 min film to a Bat Hazzard track.

STAGE 3 -For $2000%20
After the gig I will prepare the panels for framing and frame them, this will all be included in the short film.
Costs beyond the $1500 target will go to the professional framing of the car panels and film production.
On the 3rd week of the festival I want to have an exhibition in Watch this Space including the framed panels from the event, the photographs and the film.

How The Funds Will Be Used

The project that I am working on for FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY will unfortunately cost quite a bit to pull off. The more I raise the better it will be....There are quite a few associated costs....

Getting the cars to the designated site will be a mission....even though the Alice Springs wrecking yard is incredibly keen.
Hire of generator, lighting, sound system, gear for the band on the day of the gig.
Spare angle grinder batteries and blades
My outfit and Bat Hazzard's killer costumes.
Framing of panels and costs to get me from the East Coast to Alice Springs (flights)

The way in which the 'matched funds' for the festival are being divided between the artists is very simple:
The funds raised through the individual Pozible campaigns will go straight to the individual artists. Which means if I am fortunate to raise an amount over my funding target, these funds will go to me to assist in covering my costs associated with travel, development and time invested in the project. The funds that are to be matched, which is a maximum amount of $1,000 being matched for this campaign, will go towards covering some of the other costs of putting on the festival. In the event we are successful and receive the matched funds for this event, the matched $1000 will go towards covering materials for the sculpture space and a portion of the documentation that we hope to create. However, the most exciting thing that we will be able to spend the money on is getting more artist involved in the project.

The Challenges

I've never done anything like this before but I am totally up for the challenge. It is an ambitious project that requires a lot of foresight and organisation, bring it on I say! But there are gonna be a few obstacles....

Getting to Alice Springs

Finding the right cars and the right site

Putting on a live performance in a public area

The limited amount of time between the live performance and the exhibition.

A prime position on the FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY honour board. At 12 noon every day of the festival, a sound effect .wav of a cannon firing shall play and all those present will salute the honour board. Your effort shall not go unnoticed! Plus, thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia your $10 support will be matched $ for $, and you could think of it as $20 victory for community art projects around the world.
