In 2012 a group of young people from Wynnum began a project called
SN@P It’s goal was to connect local creative people in the Bayside and give them a space to share their talents. Over the past 2 year SN@P has grown and has begun catering for the need of local youth developing a safe space for them to relax, get involved and be supported. We have built up a network of over 300 young people who attend our once monthly events. These young people are looking for a long term space/s that they can call home.
AND THAT'S WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO!

There is a HUGE need for a space for young people aged 13-21 from Wynnum and the Bayside to call their own. While there are many support services in the area, there are few areas where young people can just relax and share in community, especially after normal working hours (9am-5pm). Hence why we find them hanging out on the street, railway stations and alike. Many of these young people ‘Make their own Fun’ through vandalism, dangerous behaviour and drug and alcohol abuse. The best way to reduce this behaviour is to engage with young people on their level and offer a space that can cater to their needs and give them a safe environment with good role models to be a part of.
Building Concept:
Instead of creating a centralised community space we will create multiple small community hubs throughout Wynnum. This will encourage community to be built across Wynnum and not just in one central area. The project will organically grow throughout Wynnum and the Bayside as the project raises money and gathers more support.

Using shipping containers we will purpose build structures to house the project. These structures are self contained and able to be moved. The structures will be open plan and offer multiple spaces which can be used for a variety of creative activities including music practice and recording, performance, visual arts, food, health and pop culture. These spaces will also make a great venue for small to medium events and performances. It is hoped that these structures can be placed on unused land in Wynnum specifically near train stations and communal areas.
Philosophy
‘A space to belong, a space to contribute.’
Mission
Encourage: Support and empower to be active members of the community.
Transform: offer a space that redirects the negative into the positive.
Care: A place where love is practiced.
Core Values:
Equality:
This is a communal space where all people are equal.
Respect:
It is not your it is ours.
Generosity:
A culture of joyful service where people give not because they have to, but because they want to.
Innovation:
Game changer not game player.
We estimate that to purchase and fully fit out a container will cost $5000 but we also understand that you can do a lot with people power so we are only looking for $3000 to purchase 2 shipping containers! Being from the Bayside we have the Port of Brisbane at our doorstep and heaps of second hand shipping containers for sale.
TO BREAK IT DOWN....
2x Shipping containers @ $1500 each. =$3000
Any money that is left over will be used to help us fit out the containers.
We have Architects, Builders and Helping hands all willing to volunteer their time and talents to fit out the shipping containers and make them attractive spaces for local youth!
This project is one of a kind. It will take a lot to pull it all together, but we have an awesome team of young, creative and driven people who are invested in the project.
At present our 2 biggest obstacles are:
1) Funding: We have the manpower but we need the financial support
2) Locations: We know the locations we want them in, now it is just about connecting with the owners of the land and showing them our vision and our containers
