After over a decade of performing under many guises, Kirin J Callinan has become one of Australia’s most iconic contemporary artists. As a former member of formerly young and currently former bands The Valentinos and Mercy Arms; and current co-conspirator & accomplice to currently current bands Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders and Lost Animal, Kirin J Callinan stepped out from the shadows of the Australian underground with the genre-defying sounds of 2013's solo LP ‘Embracism’, generating global intrigue & praise.
Dedicated to his craft, Kirin has toured & played alongside some of the most progressive & unique contemporary artists worldwide, released award winning video clips (garnering nominations & top gongs from JJJ, SMAC & Rage), been involved with a number of critically acclaimed albums, garnered an Australian Music Prize short-listing for debut solo album 'Embracism' and has received full length features & reviews in publications such as The NY Times, Pitchfork, Clash, The Quietus and more. You'd think Kirin has finally cracked it!
However, it seems awards & press quotes don't pay the bills. After exhausting his modest record label advance, tour support and video budget with the release of the album, five (one to come!) video clips & extensive & intensive touring in 2013; 2014 is shaping up to be a very lean year. That is, without your support...

I want to make engaging & entertaining music video's.
And I want to put on the best dog gamn show ever witnessed, for you & people just like you, the world over.
But a big hot show requires a hot little band and a hot little band costs big hot money. To tour internationally with a hot little band I'll need a big little bus, an even bigger big plane & some hot little beds to rest our hot little heads. To make a new & hot, big little record I need a little time, some hot gear and a big time hot team and time is money & money is hot, the gear is dear and a hot band isn't isn't cheap. To make new video clips I need big ideas & hot money and I'm short on at least one of these.
Of course, for a solo artist from Australia that has existed outside of the mainstream my entire career, the financial investment required for touring internationally is significant. Flights to the USA, UK, beyond and back again, work visas for myself & my band, accommodation, van rentals & fuel, backline equipment, engineer costs, marketing & publicity costs, management & agency commissions, rehearsals, band fees and per diem's, plus small day-to-day living expenses, for the next few months, will set me back a minimum of $30,000.
For those interested, and in the name of transparency & good intention, a full breakdown of my budget is available below.
With the goal of touring North America this year in further support of debut album Embracism, I have festivals & shows booked in the USA & Mexico, a busy schedule at the largest music conference in the world and a full run of North American dates w/ fellow antipodean & professional eccentric Connan Mockasin; as well as a show supporting Tame Impala in the UK, a new release, new video's and plans to complete a new album over this May, June & July with an excellent producer (soon to be announced!) in the UK & Australia. Great opportunities, sure, though as you can imagine the budget is well and truly stretched!
This is where you come in.
There are a range of incentives & rewards - some fun, some strange and all memorable & unique - that, in exchange for your generous donation, I am offering here as part of this campaign. Your money, if you're willing to part with it, will go a long way in helping my upcoming shows, tours, videos & records remain realistic ambitions.
To highlight this, as mentioned earlier, I feel it's not only fair but potentially a valuable & interesting exercise for fellow artists, fans & curios alike to include a transparent breakdown of my projected incomings & outgoings, as a touring musician signed to an independent record label.
I want my work to have as much impact as possible and to give Embracism the support it deserves. I plan to return as early as June 2014 for more touring in Australia, to be able to make the best follow-up solo album I can and to be involved in more new & exciting projects in the future.

In addition to SXSW showcases, my band & I now have an upcoming full North American tour, with shows in Washington DC, Philadelphia, NY, Boston, Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Fran, LA & more, as well as in the UK and Australia.
I believe that success in expanding my somewhat niche but loyal & growing fan-base worldwide will allow me to continue making records & touring them, both here in Australia & abroad.

THIS MEANS IN LAMENS TERMS THAT WE (ie KIRIN J CALLINAN) WILL LOSE A MINIMUM OF $6,643 (REALISTICALLY WAY MORE) IN 1 MONTH OF DATES (spread over April -> June). Our total expenses to pull off this tour come close to $40,000 which has been suplemented by $18,686 of income thanks to the kind people at the Australian Arts Council.
