Who are we?
My name is Jenna Cave. I’m a 28 year old composer living in Sydney, Australia. I started a life-long love affair with jazz music at the age of 14, discovering that I had particular knack and passion for composing at the age of 20. I went on to develop my craft as a jazz composer under the guidance of Miroslav Bukovsky at the Canberra School of Music. In 2008 I was awarded a two-year scholarship to study a Master of Music in composition at the Sydney Conervatorium with Bill Motzing.
My music has been played by jazz ensembles in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Canberra and Newcastle. I’ve had composition commissions, various awards, and a composer-in-residence with the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra.
After all of this…. I decided it was time to get my own band together! I formed the 17-piece Divergence Jazz Orchestra with trombonist Paul Weber in 2012. Comprising of fantastic young jazz players who I met during my time at the Sydney Con, we’ve performed two shows in Sydney featuring my music and music by other Australian composers. The band plays like a well-oiled machine, showcasing outstanding ensemble playing, thoughtful improvisations and an infectious sense of groove.

What do we want to do?
Included in our repertoire are the best of my big band compositions from the last 6 years, which have all been meticulously re-written and updated in 2012 for Divergence to perform.
None of these pieces have ever been professionally recorded and mixed. And I REALLY want to share my music with the world. Divergence would like to head into the studio in early 2013 to an album to be released as digital download and CD.
Recording an album of my music with a great big band has been a long-term dream of mine, and now I am nearly there. I am incredibly lucky to have an amazing band who are keen to record, they are already well rehearsed and they know my music inside out.
Why do we need funding?
Professional recording is an expensive process. This is unfortunate as composing also happens to be a poorly (and rarely) paid occupation.

Recording and Mixing Costs $3800
Mastering $900
CD Duplication and artwork $1800

Postage and printing of crowd funding rewards $150
That’s a total of $6650!
